From August 2022 to June 2023, Alec worked as a D.C. Bureau Researcher with NBC News. His responsibilities included:

  • Working on the national assignment desk to coordinate all upcoming coverage possibilities stemming from the federal government and Capital region while making daily editorial decisions over what events merit network coverage 

  • Managing the Washington bureau assignment desk as a dayside editor with responsibilities including responding to breaking news, facilitating network pool coverage, assigning camera crews and logging hearings and interviews

  • Field producing and facilitating live coverage from around Washington including at Supreme Court protests, Capitol Hill pressers and embassy events while conducting original reporting for NBC News, MSNBC and shows including Nightly News

 

From January 2022 to August 2022, Alec worked as a desk assistant with NBC News based out of Washington D.C. His roles in the program included:

· Serving as a dayside/overnight assignment desk editor, with responsibilities including: responding to breaking news events, assisting in next-day coverage, coordinating network pool coverage and managing crew requests

·  Working as a production assistant for “Nightly News,” with responsibilities including: executing research for producers on deadline, logging pressers and interviews, organizing producer/editor assignments for D.C.-based packages and creating chyrons for air      

·  Carrying out numerous responsibilities around the bureau including: processing incoming video feeds, executing research for anchors, producers and correspondents, labeling archival material, show printing and training

From June-December 2021, Alec worked with the political unit of NBC News, based out of the Washington D.C. bureau. While there, he pitched and reported on national political stories for the “Meet the Press Blog” and contributed research to the political unit’s daily morning newsletter, “First Read.” Some of the topics he covered included the January 6 insurrection, 2022 campaign fundraising, the 2022 North Carolina Democratic Senate primary, the 2021 New Jersey gubernatorial race and Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s resignation.

He also collaborated directly with political unit reporters to cover developing stories and trends including voter registration totals, 2022 race updates and polling results. Lastly, he assisted with tasks around the Washington bureau including editing footage for air and labeling archival material. More details on some of the stories he’s covered are below:

  • A rundown of the North Carolina Democratic Senate primary, featuring exclusive interviews with State Senator Jeff Jackson and the campaigns of Cheri Beasley and Erica Smith

  • A deep dive into the fundraising numbers of GOP election certification objectors since Jan. 6, which compared their 2021 totals through June 30 to their 2019 numbers by that same point

  • Chronicling the history of NY politicians who have had to resign due to scandal since 2008 in the wake of Andrew Cuomo’s resignation

  • Pew data pointing to continued polarization in America

From September 2019 to May 2020, Alec worked for The Hill’s online political show, “Rising with Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti.” While working on the show, Alec had the opportunity to work directly with producers by conducting show research, writing scripts, contributing to morning editorial calls, serving as the guest point-of-contact upon their arrival to the studio, and mic’ing up guests before they appeared on air.

Involved in all aspects of the show’s production, Alec also learned how to cut clips to post online using Adobe Premier Pro, create graphics/tearsheets using Adobe Photoshop and operate Skype calls with non-studio guests.

Alec also had the chance to accompany producers on live shots to the U.S. Capitol, where he worked on interviews with Representative Ben Cline and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn. He also had the opportunity to meet major political figures including Andrew Yang, Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Governor Bill Weld.
