GW Hatchet Podcast

From March 2020-December 2021, Alec hosted the GW Hatchet’s weekly news podcast, ‘Getting to the Bottom of It.’ In each episode, which typically spanned 20 minutes, Alec interviewed students, professors, administrators and other campus newsmakers as broke down a major story from the week. Typical listenership for the podcast ranged from 50-200 plays per episode.

Alec was twice named a finalist for the Society of Professional Journalists’ “Best Podcast Episode,” both in 2021 and in 2022. His reporting in those episodes covered the 2021 “March On for Voting Rights” and the future of higher education in the wake of the pandemic.

Some of the stories Alec covered throughout his tenure included:

  • An in-depth look at the impact of GW’s real estate expansion in Foggy Bottom over time on gentrification

  • Speaking with the executive director of the American Public Health Association and the President of the Association of American Colleges & Universities regarding the fall semester on college campuses in the wake of COVID-19

  • Navigating calls by various faculty members for University President Thomas LeBlanc’s resignation

  • Interviewing students who have lost critical on-campus jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic

  • Speaking with newly elected SA leaders in the immediate days following student government elections

  • Discussing a petition by doctoral students calling for the University to expand its funding package for them amidst the coronavirus pandemic

For Alec’s Introduction to Web Production class, he created a social media campaign which pairs The Sentencing Project, a non-profit dedicated to research and advocacy concerning mass incarceration, with Adidas. Using Adobe Spark, he created the #PlayforJustice movement and built a mock social media campaign around it with the overall goal of increasing The Sentencing Project’s donations for the month of October. This strategy was coupled with Adidas selling orange-colored products, and focused on a target audience of men from ages 30-55 who watch sports.

Alec created the infographic pictured here for his Introduction to Web Production class. The infographic, which was created using Adobe Illustrator, displays some of the major statistics surrounding public pre-k in the United States. As the infographic displays, despite large quantities of government funding each year, demographics and wealth can play a major role in who ends up receiving a quality early childhood education experience.

Alec created an info-text video for his Introduction to Web Production class, which displays the harmful effects of carbon emissions on crops. Adobe Premier Pro was used to create the video, as Alec also obtained various shots and an interview for the video using professional camera equipment.
